VOP - Harmon served the interests of the people
The union members of USW Locals 12775 and 13796 are
saddened to hear of Marlow Harmon’s death. We have lost
a true friend. He filled his time in office with many
accomplishments. There is one achievement in particular
that carries a significant importance to all of the
people, businesses and industries of La Porte County.
Almost to the day, five years ago, NIPSCO announced
that it would close its La Porte facility, leaving all
of La Porte County without any operations facility to
respond to gas leaks and electric outages. Marlow
Harmon, with a career of public-safety service, knew
what this would mean for the citizens of La Porte
County.
As La Porte County Commission president, Marlow
Harmon led La Porte County in being the first county to
officially oppose NIPSCO’s plans. These days, it’s hard
to envision a public official having the moral fiber to
stand up to a Fortune 300 company. Marlow Harmon and the
La Porte County Commission did just that and much more.
In fact, what they did in helping to stop NIPSCO has not
been duplicated anywhere else in the country as
utilities cut services and facilities to save on their
bottom line.
It’s rare to see public officials take a strong and
unwavering stand on issues that affect all people and
can impact many of its businesses. Perhaps future
politicians could take a page from Marlow Harmon on how
to best serve the interests of the people.
