Notices of NIPSCO job openings drew so many online
applicants that computer servers at times couldn't handle all the
inquiries, according to NIPSCO.
The utility company
reports 4,732 people applied over the last two weeks for 125 openings
for meter readers and construction helpers.
"These are good jobs
with good benefits," said Leslie Gerson, NIPSCO director of human
resources. "With today's economy, we knew that there would be some
interest, but we didn't anticipate that there would be thousands of
applications.
The utility is no
longer taking applications for those positions. NIPSCO is Indiana's
largest utility serving 712,000 natural gas and 445,000 electric
customers in Northern Indiana.
